Occasionally connect the drive to the computer and use the backup tool, or leave it plugged in whenever you’re home, and it’ll back up.

On Windows 10 and Windows 11, use File History. I do have a lot of mp3's (podcasts etc) backed up though as they would be difficult to get back. If you have an external USB hard drive, you can just back up to that drive using your computer’s built-in backup features. I was hoping to use the Carbonite backup solution, but they do not support external har drives. It is a simple file server running windows 7, however all of the data is on an external usb Drobo.

Time Machine runs automatically every hour. Burn your backups and then put the disks away in a safe place. TM Error Logger can be run after you experience an error and it will show you a report of when the error happened and even which file or folder caused the error. If there is a problem, you will often see a dialogue box with the error, but there is no way to check previous error. Unfortunately, Time Machine does not have provide this kind of information. But if there are problems, it's often nice to review what errors were encountered and when. One of the short comings of Time Machine is it's error reporting.
